If You Can’t Be Yourself, Who Can You Be?

by Dian Reid· Follow Dian on

Sometimes I get all contemplative and start asking myself what it all means, this crazy, unknown thing called life. And then I remember just how simple it is, if I allow it to be.

"Where does it all lead? What will become of us? It leads to each other. We become ourselves." Patti Smith

Everything leads us to each other. Look around. Notice the people surrounding you. You chose this space you’re in, and your choices that led you to this space have also led to you all the people in that space.

Don’t like the people in your space? Don’t like the space? Make some different decisions. (Don’t make me go all Albert Einstein on you.)

In every decision you make, you choose not only the space you’re in, but who you’re becoming. Not every choice will be a conscious choice, but make no mistake: your choices point to who you are today. You will always become yourself.

Don’t like the you you’ve become? Make some different choices.

Make conscious choices that represent a you that you want to hang out with. That you would want to have breakfast, lunch, and dinner with every night. That you can look in the mirror and feel good about. Every.Day.

Be the you that you want to see in the world. The you that you’re proud of. The you that stands up for herself, even in challenging situations. The you that takes her own values seriously. The you that is awesomely, unequivocally, beautifully you.

Don’t know who that person is? Get to know her.

Here are a few things to help you along the way:

There’s no easy way to create change, but it’s a hell of a lot easier when you focus on putting one foot in front of the other.

When all else fails, just be yourself.

“Be the you that you’d want to hang out with.” ~ Love that!

There’s a Me inside me that I’d love to hang out with. We’re just not that well acquainted, yet. But I’m working on that. Thanks for sharing this, Dian. And I’m taking that sentence with me, every day.
