Summer of Authenticity: Wrap Up

by Dian Reid-Jancic· Follow Dian on

soa-fullyalive-roundJune saw us ease into summer with the first installments of the Summer of Authenticity: Fully Alive! guest blog series. I asked a score of amazing women I know if they would help me bring an idea into reality, and to my delight, nearly all of them said yes. Not only did they say yes, but many of them were actually excited and honored to participate.

I had this idea that as adults we experience summer differently than we did when we were kids, and I wondered if by writing about summer, we couldn’t feel more alive by sharing our experiences. Not necessarily of the past, but maybe what we want from our present, hope for our future. I wanted people to express what summer means to them, and how even though we’re not kids anymore we still find ways to feel fully alive.

I asked each guest to use summer, authenticity, and being fully alive as inspiration for their contribution, leaving the rest up to them. While I had my own ideas of how to tie these three concepts together, I needed their wisdom and experience on the page, not mine. They did not disappoint. What they shared each week was inspiring and authentic, and fully embodied what it means to be fully alive, each in her own way.

When I began this adventure I had no idea how it would turn out. I couldn’t have planned more beautiful essays if I’d told them exactly what to write. Every week I felt like I’d been given a gift of raw, organic material from which to pluck eternal wisdom for being my best, most authentic self in life, not just summer. Summer is just part of the cycle.

As for how I feel it turned out …

It was like a summer farmers market filled with organic, sustainable wisdom that will continue to feed us all for years to come.

Summer doesn’t have to be whatever your mind thinks it used to be. It doesn’t have to be whatever you expected it to be. If you take nothing else from these essays, take this:

Decide what you want summer (and life) to look like, and then be present in making it happen.
