Reverb 10: Beautifully Different.

by Dian Reid-Jancic· Follow Dian on

There’s the slight crick in my nose from being broken while sitting in a conference room at work in 2000. There’s the crossing of my front toe over my index toe every time I kick my legs up to relax. There’s the bouncing of my feet while crossed every time I type on my laptop when my feet are kicked up. There’s the contagious laugh that sounds just like my mom’s when it comes from the belly. There’s the dimple in my left cheek as a result of an angel kissing me when I was born (according to my mother). But that’s not really what makes me different from anyone else.

Think about what makes you different and what you do that lights people up.

Reflect on all the things that make you different – you’ll find they’re what make you beautiful.

~ Karen Walrond

The randomness in my Top Rated (4 stars or higher) playlist in iTunes—you’ll find country and jazz and hip hop and folk and classical and classic rock and punk and alternative rock and r & b and pop and meditative and new wave and easy listening and blues and even some rap—is what I think about when I think of what makes me different.

There are things about us all that make us different, but it’s when we find common ground in our differences that beauty is present. When we can connect on something we both believe is different about us and bond on that topic, that’s where beauty is present. When the things that make us different do not separate us as humans, that’s where beauty is present.

I’m different from all of you. For me, the beauty in that is that I’m not alone in our differences. Your differences, my differences, our differences light me up.

This post is written as Day 8 of Reverb 10, inspired and created by Gwen Bell (Best of ’09) and her rockingly awesome cohorts. Are you reverbing too? I’d love for you to share yourself in the comments below.

  • Phenomenal! Perfect! LOVE this and am raising my hands, with yours, in bringing it to fruition. Bravo!!

    • Thank you Julie =) I love that you’re such a cheerleader for growth and creativity in doing so!

  • Beautifully put thanks for sharing and, I must say, I too have inexplicable randomness on my i-tunes four star playlist.

  • I have eclectic taste in music, too and I love how you talk about connections among our differences and I agree with you that that is what is so beautiful and wonderful about people.

  • Yes indeedy Dian 🙂 You spoke my mind. We’re different and the same. I’m flying my freak flag with joy, woohoo!

Sooo beautiful, Dian. Your writing always moves me, makes me think, inspires me, reminds me of the ways that we are all the same yet different. Thank you!
fyi…. I just saw a wonderful “short” on Spiritual Cinema DVD last night called “Flawed”. Reminds me of what you are writing about…check it out if you get Spiritual Cinema or know someone who does.
