Reverb 10: 5 Minutes.

by Dian Reid-Jancic· Follow Dian on

As I read today’s Reverb prompt, it looked hauntingly familiar. I’m currently giving Patti Digh’s Life Is A Verb the once-through before I dive in and begin my year of practice with it, and in locations 2344-51 of the Kindle version of this book, I read:

Your memory is going to be completely erased in five minutes. Your have only that amount of time to write down everything you want or need to remember.

I read this action item two nights ago and thought, Oh thank God I’m not doing this right now, my memory is terrible … I’ll never get down everything I want to remember from my life in 5 minutes … better start thinking about what I want to remember now …

It would seem I’ve manifested myself a workaround:

Imagine you will completely lose your memory of 2010 in five minutes.

Set an alarm for five minutes and capture the things you most want to remember about 2010.

~ Patti Digh

5 Minutes.

Five minutes feels more like 30 seconds when asked to call upon my memory for details.

My list ended up looking like this:

  • ringing in the New Year at home, peacefully with The Wildcat, no traffic, no party, no hangover
  • playing with Jackson, floppy ears flopping about
  • vacation in Tahoe with The Wildcat, especially after the lights went out
  • snowboarding, wind in my face, heart racing, blood pumping, lips smiling

I should just put a link to my website…all the goods are there…

  • Brandi Carlile in concert at The Mountain Winery with the girls: blanket, picnic, wine, finding a place to pee
  • installing the shower door with the wildcat: it IS possible to work on a project together & not want to kill each other
  • try kale. you’ll like it.

Reading my list, I feel defeated. I wish I had a better memory. I know there are And somehow in that I’m reminded that life isn’t about memories, it’s about living. I guess one final thing I would add to the list would be:

  • trust 2010 was great; now go make 2011 better.

I’ll have to remember all that when I go to capture the highlights of my life—somehow it seems easier now …

This post is written as Day 15 of Reverb 10, inspired and created by Gwen Bell (Best of ’09) and her rockingly awesome cohorts. Are you reverbing too? I’d love for you to share yourself in the comments below.
