Thrivin’ Tuesdays: Questions vs. Answers

by Dian Reid-Jancic· Follow Dian on

“Sometimes questions are more important than answers.”

~ Nancy Willard

“Big question mark” Benjamin Reay

We get so caught up sometimes in looking for answers, that we forget how important our questions are.

Forget about “How did I get here?” and “What do I do now?”

Forget about “Why does this keep happening to me?” or “When will things get better?”

Forget about the questions that leave you running around in circles in your mind. Forget about the questions that are searching for answers. Umm…aren’t all questions searching for answers, Dian? I don’t know. Are they?

This morning I breathed and then visualized becoming one with the ocean:

Feel what it’s like to put your foot in the ocean. Feel what it’s like to let the cold water warm against your skin. Feel what it’s like to move fluidly through the water, as if it were a part of your own being. Feel what it’s like to be a part of the waves rolling toward the shoreline. Feel what it’s like to well over and break while people ooh and ahh over your natural, simple beauty. Feel what it’s like to be a part of the most powerful body in the Universe. Feel what it’s like to be one with the ocean.

This exercise doesn’t feel like a question, but when we’re through I ask:

  • What does it feel like to become one with the ocean?
  • What is it to move fluidly through your day?
  • How does it feel to have others ooh and ahh over your natural, simple beauty? (I assure you: you have many a natural, simple beauty—seek at least one out today)
  • Who are you when you’re one with the ocean?

These aren’t the types of questions that have you running around in circles. These are the types of questions that have you contemplating your being—and what you want/who you are, moving forward. These are the types of questions that draw out who you are on the inside and beckon that being to come out and play in your daily life.

Play. Play? I can’t play today, Dian, I have to work! Yes, you’ll work. And while you’re working, let your mind play. Let your mind play around with both the questions and the answers. Let your mind swing on the jungle gym and try out what it means to move fluidly through your day. Allow your mind to sift through your being and discover which natural, simple beauty she likes best today—there are so many to choose from!

So on this Thrivin’ Tuesday, here’s what I leave you with: Be creative with your questions. Be creative with your answers. Being creative with your questions will allow you to be creative with your answers. I’m still working on the exact formula for a Thrivin’ life, but I’m pretty sure the same ol’ boring answers are not a part of it. And I’m pretty sure you are.

Now, go Get Your Thrive On!

Don’t forget, you can still Get Your Thrive On, even if you’re not in Long Beach on Tuesday mornings. Join me for Thrivin’ Thursdays at 3PM Pacific Time every Thursday afternoon.
