Best of 09 Blog Challenge: Social Web Moment (#best09)

Note: Every day thru December 31 I’ll be posting from this list. Feel free to join the fun. Just post your link in the comments section so I can follow you, too.

I can hardly begin to tell you the growth I’ve had over the social web. I’ve met people I’ve connected with on MySpace, Linked In and Facebook, and been turned on to awesome articles, tools, and insights via Twitter, Stumble, Digg, and Delicious.

For me, the biggest social web moment was the mere realization that everything has shifted. We’re not in Kansas anymore, Toto. Email isn’t the newest best way to communicate. The internet isn’t just for people who like to waste time all day pretending like they’re working because they’re bored at their job. We don’t use social media because we don’t know how to be social, we use it because we want to be more productive and still be social (and maybe have a little fun while we’re at it).

I can’t tell you the ins and outs of social media—that’s not what I do—but I can tell you, as someone who is a social being, and whose livelihood thrives on connecting with people, the development of the social web and its media and tools have helped me learn new ways of being social and connecting with people. And it’s my personal belief that connecting with people is part of why we’re all here in the first place.

How are you more social by way of the Web?

I loved being on our big roadtrip of 2009 and meeting so many of my formerly “only online” friends across the country. The other caveat of social networking is keeping up with my local friends (and them keeping up with me)… you know, those status messages on facebook (which I link to twitter) get out there. People appreciate knowing. I appreciate knowing….. and it is just plain fun, too.

So true, Julie! I love the connections the web makes possible…who knew there were so many awesome people out there to connect with?!
