Gratitude List: Day 2

by Dian Reid-Jancic· Follow Dian on

As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, I want to add 39 things to my gratitude list today. I’ve decided to take it a step further and add 39 things to the list every day until the end of the month. Why? Because of all the things The Secret asks you to do, developing an Attitude of Gratitude gives me the quickest relief of instant gratification. It just feels good to be grateful for things and people in my life.

Why 39 things? No real reason, but maybe loosely tied to the fact that I read Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat Pray Love, and I loved her explanation for creating 39 stories for each chapter of her book. Want to know the reason? Read the book. As for my list of 39 more things to be grateful about, wait no longer:

  1. Sly (my tuxedo cat) and his incessant need to rest his paw on me whenever he’s sitting close enough to do so.
  2. The Animal, which picks up every last bit of cat/dog hair in our home (when I remember to use it).
  3. Pint glasses in the freezer.
  4. The mirror on our living room wall, which reminds me to look at myself before criticizing others.
  5. eBay for the great deals on things I wouldn’t pay retail for.
  6. The part during dinner where we ask each other, “What was the best part of your day, love?”
  7. These awesome cards I got from White Hot Truth to send out to people this month.
  8. The certification program I recently went through, which gave me more awesome tools to use in my coaching.
  9. My favorite pair of Lucky Brand Jeans, holes and all.
  10. Sports bras.
  11. Our two-car garage, without which parking would be an atrocious daily task near our home.
  12. My morning pages journal time.
  13. The sight of Jackson sleeping in the sun.
  14. My DeWalt power drill…I think of my dad every time I use it.
  15. My cough, which sounds exactly like my mom’s used to.
  16. The kind, loving, and immediate way in which my girlfriends family has embraced me.
  17. The rare occasion on which I hit my tee shot perfect and it flies effortlessly down the middle of the fairway.
  18. Penny Lane for all the structure it gave me when I needed it most.
  19. Lisa Mae for being an inspiring kindred spirit.
  20. Wireless mice.
  21. Seeing Brandi Carlile live, because her music speaks to my soul.
  22. DirecTV.
  23. IKEA.
  24. Coffee on the couch with my girl on Saturday mornings.
  25. Our tankless water heater. Seriously.
  26. Granny Smith apples.
  27. iTunes.
  28. The MTA.
  29. The few random pedicures I get a couple times a year.
  30. Dave Gilmore, the best business mentor I ever had.
  31. Alison Turner.
  32. Ear plugs, for when a certain someone sleeps like a chainsaw next to me.
  33. My life coach—man, have I gotten a LOT done since I began working with her!
  34. Softball, without which I might have stayed a hoodlum all those years ago.
  35. Wednesday afternoons with one of my favorite coaching colleagues.
  36. Graph paper.
  37. Self-cleaning ovens.
  38. La Parolaccia.
  39. Wine Crush.

Sly HatNot everything on these lists are major, not everything is minor. What I’m learning is that there are so many things for me to be grateful about in my life. Many are huge things that I rarely take the time to think about because they’re so stable in my life, while others I hardly think about because I don’t use or see them on a daily basis. But given a moment to think, every single item/person/memory/action on this list holds a special place in my heart.

What have you found out about yourself in creating your list/s?
